Description
The calendar is a story about a dream, the heritage of ancestors and how one tradition that had fallen into oblivion has gained new life.
More than a century and a half ago, women around Tõstamaa started knitting very beautiful white „rose“ stockings and gloves. At first these were very modestly decorated, but in a couple of decades they became very sumptuous: the dense and delicate fabric was covered with rich, mostly reddish-rose patterns. Often the patterns were repeated, sometimes with small variations and the most common ones even had their own names.
But time did its job. Probably in the 20th century, white, single-threaded gloves were no longer practical, and the technique of inlaying knitting was forgotten.
The calendar summarizes the ten years of operation of the Tõstamaa Handicraft Center through our most well-known technology and masters – through inlaying and inlayers.
Calendar is in Estonian and English.
